The rip didn't finish

Last updated: 29 September 2026

When a rip fails, Rippsy shows "The rip didn't finish" with the reason. Nothing half-done is left behind: Rippsy writes to a temporary .part file and only renames it when the video is complete, so a failed or cancelled rip never leaves a broken video that looks finished.

Find the message you saw below.

"Most of this disc can't be read"

More than half the disc couldn't be read. Clean it gently (soft cloth, from the center outward), then try again, or try it in another DVD drive. See Scratched discs.

"The disc couldn't be read all the way through, even with recovery"

Same advice: clean the disc and try again, or try another drive. Making a disc image (ISO) sometimes gets further on a difficult disc.

"…Rippsy needs about … of free space" or "The destination drive ran out of space"

See Not enough space.

"Rippsy couldn't write to that folder" or "Can't save there"

Rippsy isn't allowed to save in that folder, or can't create it. Click Change… and pick a folder in your own user area, such as Videos or Documents, or an external drive.

"Rippsy's video engine (FFmpeg) is missing"

MP4 and MKV rips need the FFmpeg program that comes with Rippsy. It can go missing if antivirus software quarantined it or files were removed. Reinstall Rippsy, or pick your own copy in Settings. ISO copies still work in the meantime.

"The conversion stopped with an error" or "stopped unexpectedly"

  1. Try again. If it happens again, try MKV, original quality, which doesn't convert the video.
  2. If you chose your own FFmpeg in Settings, switch back to the built-in one.
  3. Send us the details (below).

"Rip cancelled"

You (or closing Rippsy) stopped the rip. Nothing was saved. Start it again when you're ready.

Still stuck?

Click Get help with this on the result screen. It opens a support message with Rippsy's error already filled in. Leave Include diagnostic info checked; it adds your Rippsy and Windows versions, drive details, and the recent diagnostic log, with file and folder names removed. We usually reply within 24 to 48 hours.
