Problems playing the video

Last updated: 29 September 2026

Which player should I use?

  • MP4 plays in almost everything: the Windows Media Player and Movies & TV apps, phones and iPhones, smart TVs, Plex, and web browsers. If a file must play everywhere, rip it as MP4.
  • MKV plays in VLC (free), Plex, and many smart TVs, but not on every phone or older TV.
  • ISO isn't a video file. Double-click it to open it as a drive, then play it with a DVD-aware player such as VLC.

Brief glitches, skips, or a moment of frozen picture

If the disc was scratched, Rippsy skips spots it couldn't read, and the video glitches for a moment at each one. The result screen tells you how many spots were skipped. To try to get them back, clean the disc and rip it again, or try another drive. See Scratched discs.

If the result screen didn't mention scratches, the glitch is probably on the disc itself; check by playing the disc in a DVD player.

Comb-like lines on moving things

That's interlacing, how camcorders and TVs recorded video. MP4 and MKV rips are deinterlaced automatically. MKV, original quality keeps the disc's video untouched, so it isn't. Rip as MP4 or MKV instead, or use a player that deinterlaces (in VLC: Video → Deinterlace).

Choppy or stuttering playback

  • An older PC may struggle with MKV, original quality files. Try MP4.
  • A file playing from a slow USB stick or network drive can stutter. Copy it to the PC first.

Sound problems

  • No sound, or sound only on the PC: some TVs and phones can't play the disc's original audio in MKV files. Rip as MP4, which converts sound to a format every device plays.
  • Wrong language or commentary track: MP4 and MKV keep every audio track from the disc. In your player, choose another audio track (in VLC: Audio → Audio Track).
  • No subtitles: subtitles aren't kept in MP4 or MKV files. An ISO keeps them.

The picture looks squashed or stretched

Try a different player (VLC or Plex) first. Most show the disc's shape correctly. If it's wrong everywhere, contact support from ? Help → Contact support… and tell us what kind of disc it was.
