Rippsy privacy policy

Rippsy is a Windows desktop application published by LTC Labs. This policy covers what the application does with your data. The short version: your discs and videos never leave your computer.

The diagnostic log never contains file or folder names. They are removed as each line is written.

What Rippsy sends to LTC Labs

At most three things. You can see and change all of them in Settings.

1. An update check. At most once a day, Rippsy sends a request to https://www.ltclabs.dev/api/app/update-check with the Rippsy and Windows versions, the platform (windows), an anonymous identifier for your PC, and a random ID that changes every time Rippsy starts. The identifier is a one-way hash of your processor's ID and Windows' machine ID, so it can't be turned back into either and isn't linked to you. The first check after starting Rippsy waits a random-looking amount of time (up to an hour) so every PC doesn't check in at once. Our server also sees your IP address, as every web server does. We store only a hash of it, plus the approximate country and region derived from it, to count installs by version and region. The check is on by default. Turn off Check for updates once a day in Settings to stop it. If you install from the Microsoft Store, the Store also updates Rippsy independently.

2. Crash reports, only if you turn them on. If Send crash reports is on (it is off by default) and Rippsy crashes, it sends the error type, the error message, and the technical stack trace, with file and folder names removed, along with the same version and anonymous identifier.

3. Support messages, only when you send one. From Help → Contact support: the email address you type (shown back to you as you type, so you can catch a typo), an optional name, your subject and message, and:

   • if you leave Include diagnostic info checked: your Rippsy and Windows versions, the anonymous identifier, which drives are present, and the last 500 lines of the diagnostic log, all with file and folder names removed. Larger logs are uploaded straight to our private support storage (Amazon S3) and linked to your ticket;
   • if you tick Attach a screenshot of the Rippsy window: a picture of Rippsy's own window only (never your desktop or other apps). It can show the save folder and file name you typed, which is why it's off unless you choose it;
   • if you opened support from the Help panel: which Rippsy screen you were on, the help page you last read, and what you searched for in Help.

   Sending a message also makes an update check if Rippsy doesn't already have permission from the last day, because that's how the app is allowed to file a ticket.

Rippsy does not send usage analytics, which help pages you read (except inside a support message you send), or information about what you rip, and it does not upload, convert on a server, or back up your videos. It has no accounts and no advertising.

Copy-protected discs

Rippsy reads a few sectors of a disc to check whether it's copy-protected. If it is, Rippsy tells you and stops. That check happens entirely on your PC and nothing about the disc is sent anywhere.

Children

Rippsy isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect information from them.
