Discs wear out
Scratches, smudges, and plain age make old discs harder to read every year. A video file can be backed up and copied for everyone. A disc in a drawer can't.
Nothing plays them anymore
Phones, tablets, and most new laptops have no disc drive. An MP4 plays on all of them, on the TV, and in Plex.
Other tools are fiddly

Made for old, scratched discs
The discs that matter most are often the ones in the worst shape.
- Weak spots get extra tries. A drive often reads a scratched area on the second or third attempt.
- Unreadable spots are skipped, not fatal. You get a brief glitch instead of a failed rip, and Rippsy tells you how much it couldn't read.
- It switches to recovery on its own. You don't have to do anything.
For discs you made yourself
Rippsy copies home-made DVDs: camcorder, wedding, family, DVD-recorder, and PC-burned discs. Commercial movie DVDs are copy-protected. Rippsy checks every disc, and when it finds protection it tells you plainly and stops. It never bypasses copy protection, and there's no setting or add-on that changes that.
