Copy-protected discs

What it does

Rippsy is for discs you made yourself: camcorder, wedding, family, DVD-recorder, and PC-burned discs.

Movies and TV shows you buy on DVD are copy-protected. When you put one in, Rippsy checks for protection and says:

This disc is copy-protected, so Rippsy can't copy it.

Start ripping stays grayed out, and the disc image (ISO) option isn't offered. Rippsy does not bypass copy protection, and there's no setting to change that.

The check reads a few small pieces of the disc on your PC. Nothing about the disc is sent anywhere.

How to use it

There's nothing to do. If you see this message on a store-bought movie, that's expected. Take the disc out and put in a home-made one; Rippsy notices the change on its own.

Protected discs are refused the same way when you open a VIDEO_TS folder copied from one.

Troubleshooting

"But I made this disc myself." Home-made discs aren't protected, so a few things can cause this by mistake:

• The disc is dirty or scratched right where Rippsy checks. When a drive can't read those spots, it can look like protection. Clean the disc (wipe from the center outward with a soft cloth) and click Refresh, or try it in another DVD drive.
• It was made by a professional service (for example a wedding videographer or a tape-to-DVD service) that turned protection on. Ask them for an unprotected copy or the original files.
