Is Rippsy really free? Yes. No trial, no account, no ads, no upgrade to buy.
Can I copy movies I bought on DVD? No. Store-bought movie DVDs are copy-protected, and Rippsy doesn't bypass copy protection. It's made for discs you made yourself. See Copy-protected discs.
What kinds of discs work? Home-made video DVDs: from a camcorder, a DVD recorder, a wedding or event videographer (if they didn't copy-protect it), or burned on a PC. They need to be finalized.
What about Blu-ray discs, audio CDs, or VHS tapes? Rippsy saves video DVDs only. It can make a disc image (ISO) of other unprotected discs, but it won't turn them into videos. For tapes, you'd need a capture device first; many people had tapes transferred to DVD, and those discs work well.
Which format should I choose? MP4 for almost everyone. See Choosing a format.
How long does a rip take? Usually from a few minutes up to about the length of the video, depending on your PC, the quality setting, and the format. MKV, original quality is fastest. Scratched discs take longer.
Can I use my PC while it rips? Yes. Rippsy runs the conversion at low priority so your PC stays responsive, and keeps it from going to sleep until the rip is done.
Can I rip several discs at once? One at a time. When one finishes, the tray opens and Rip another disc is ready for the next.
Will ripping damage my disc? No. Rippsy only reads the disc. Reading a scratched disc repeatedly is normal and harmless.
Does Rippsy upload my videos? Never. Your discs and videos stay on your PC. See Privacy.
How do I share a video with family? Rip it as MP4. You can then copy it to a USB stick, add it to Plex, or upload it to the photo or file-sharing service you already use. MP4 plays on iPhones, Android phones, and smart TVs.
Where are my videos saved? In Videos\Rippsy unless you chose another folder. After a rip, click Show in folder.
Does it work on a Mac? No, Rippsy is for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit).
How do I get updates? The Microsoft Store updates Rippsy automatically. The portable version checks once a day and shows a banner when a new version is available.

Why does Rippsy include FFmpeg? FFmpeg is the free video engine Rippsy uses to convert discs to MP4 and MKV. It runs as a separate program under its own license (the GPL). You can use your own copy instead in Settings.
