The scan is slow

Last updated: 22 October 2026

How long it should take

Underbrush reads the name and size of every file on the drive. A fast SSD with a couple of million files usually takes from half a minute to a couple of minutes. The counter at the top keeps moving while it works.

What makes it slower

  • Spinning hard drives are much slower than SSDs to list millions of small files.
  • Lots of tiny files, such as node_modules folders and package caches.
  • Other heavy disk work at the same time, like a backup, an antivirus scan or a big copy.

What you can do

  • Scan your Home folder instead of the whole drive. Pick it in the drive box.
  • Press Stop at any time. Nothing has changed on your drive, and you can scan again later.
  • Close other heavy work and scan again.

Underbrush skips shortcuts, symbolic links and junctions, so it never loops or counts a folder twice.
