Mac: folders couldn't be read (Full Disk Access)

Last updated: 22 October 2026

What you see

After a scan, the Dashboard says "N folders couldn't be read". macOS protects parts of your Library (Mail, Messages, Safari and others) until you allow an app to read them. Those folders are left out of the totals.

How to fix it

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
  2. Turn on Underbrush. If it isn't listed, click + and choose it from Applications.
  3. Quit and reopen Underbrush, then press Rescan.

Full Disk Access only lets Underbrush read sizes. It still never clears anything in Leave it.

Also on a Mac

  • Sizes count in 1000s, like Finder. Windows counts in 1024s, so the same folder can look a little different on each.
  • Other disks aren't scanned when you scan Macintosh HD. The system volume is skipped so nothing is counted twice.
  • Cloud files have to be made online-only by hand for now: in Finder, select them and choose Remove Download.
