Troubleshooting

Last updated: 6 September 2026

Terminal not displaying output

  1. Verify the shell command is correct.
  2. Check that the working directory exists.
  3. Try a different shell (PowerShell, CMD).
  4. Check the log at %LOCALAPPDATA%\StreamView\streamview.log.

Environment variables / API token not reaching an agent

  • Save, then Restart the pane. A running process keeps the environment it was created with. Saving a stream restarts it when the environment box changed; if you only edited Windows User env, press Restart yourself.
  • Put per-stream secrets in the stream box, not only in User env. The box (or an attached pack) is encrypted on disk, so a stream can hold its own API_BASE_URL / API_TOKEN without Windows User env. See Environment variables and secrets.
  • Copied the data directory to another PC? Encrypted values cannot be read there. Re-enter them on that machine.
  • Confirm with a throwaway pane: a command that prints $env:API_BASE_URL and the length of $env:API_TOKEN — not the token itself.

Claude opens on Unknown command: /d

An older StreamView rewrite turned cmd.exe /k cd /d "path" && claude into claude.exe /d "path" && claude, and Claude treated /d as one of its slash commands. Current builds repair that leftover on restore, Restart, and new launches. If a pane still shows the error, press ↻ Restart on it (or close StreamView and reopen) so the repaired command is the one that launches.

Keyboard input not working

  1. Click inside the terminal pane to focus it.
  2. Check the status indicator (green = running).
  3. Restart the stream from its tab.

Garbled typing in Claude Code (or other full-screen apps)

If characters look scrambled or overwrite each other while you type in a full-screen app, update to 2026.7.4 or later — this was a terminal-emulation bug where some cursor/style escape sequences leaked into the display. It's fixed.

Mouse wheel won't scroll in Claude Code

In a pane running a full-screen app (Claude Code, vim, less), the wheel scrolls the app's own view, not StreamView's scrollback — so wheel-up scrolls Claude Code's transcript. This works in 2026.7.3 or later; on older builds the wheel does nothing in those apps. At a normal shell prompt the wheel scrolls StreamView's scrollback as usual.

Performance issues

  • Reduce buffer size in Settings > General.
  • Close unused streams.
  • Disable auto-save sessions if you don't need history.

Loud fan / high CPU while StreamView is open

Check Task Manager first. If Antimalware Service Executable (Windows Defender) or Microsoft Windows Search Indexer is the process burning CPU — not StreamView — the scanners are reacting to StreamView's file writes, not to StreamView itself.

The fix, in order of impact:

  1. Settings > Data > Performance > Optimize antivirus scanning. Adds only StreamView's own folders to Defender's exclusion list (admin approval required). See Settings.
  2. Move the data directory out of OneDrive (Settings > Data > Data Directory). Inside a synced folder, every history write causes a sync, which causes another scan.
  3. Open indexing settings from the same section and untick StreamView's data folder in Indexing Options.

If StreamView itself is the process using the CPU, reduce the buffer size and close unused streams as above, and file a ticket via Help > Contact Support with your log attached.

Admin / elevated terminals

The built-in PowerShell (Admin) profile runs sudo powershell. StreamView panes use ConPTY, which can't trigger a UAC prompt for a child process on its own, so elevation depends on Windows' sudo:

  • You must be able to elevate. A standard (non-admin) user gets a UAC prompt asking for an administrator's password; without it, the elevated shell can't start. An admin user gets a Yes/No consent prompt.
  • Windows sudo must be set to "Inline." In Settings > System > For developers > Enable sudo, choose Inline so the elevated shell runs in the pane. In "In a new window" mode the admin shell opens in a separate window and the pane closes immediately; "With input disabled" mode can't accept your keystrokes.
  • sudo needs Windows 11 24H2 or later. On older Windows, install gsudo (winget install gsudo) and use it instead.
  • Simplest option: relaunch StreamView itself elevated via the window menu's Run as Administrator — then every PowerShell pane is already admin and no sudo is needed.

When elevation fails, the pane prints a short note explaining which of the above applies.
