Workspaces

What it does

Workspaces group related terminals — one workspace per project or task. Each workspace keeps its own streams and layout independently, so you can switch projects instantly.

How to use it

  • Create — click + next to the workspace tabs.
  • Rename — double-click a workspace tab.
  • Switch — click a workspace tab. Switching restores the stream you were last focused on in that workspace.
  • Change icon — right-click a workspace tab → Change Icon…. Pick from the emoji set or Upload custom image… (your file is copied to {DataDir}/workspace-icons/ so OneDrive — or whatever your data directory points at — carries it between machines).
  • Reorder — drag a workspace tab left or right. Order is saved with your session.
  • Delete — right-click a workspace tab.

The Starred tab

Click the ☆ next to Play/Stop in a pane header to star that stream (or right-click the stream tab → Star). Starred streams gather in the pinned ★ Starred tab at the front of the workspace strip — from every workspace at once, which is how you get the three sessions you're actually working on side by side without them sharing a project. Stream tabs themselves stay a name plus an activity dot (green / yellow / gray, same as the pane header), so a row of them stays readable on a large monitor.

Starring is a lens, not a move. The stream stays exactly where it lives; it simply also appears in Starred. Un-star it and it carries on in its own workspace, untouched. Because Starred shows the same live panes rather than copies, a starred stream keeps running as you switch in and out of the view.

The Starred tab is always present, even with nothing starred, and it isn't a real workspace: it can't be renamed, deleted, or dragged, you can't add a new stream directly to it, and it never appears as a Move to Workspace target. Its order follows your workspace order.

Stars persist with your session.

The Recent tab

Beside Starred sits a pinned 🕘 Recent tab: live panes first (the ones still running or idle), then streams you've used, newest first, gathered from every workspace. It answers "where was I?" without having to remember which workspace something was in. A pane that's still working is not left off the list.

Like Starred it's a lens — the same live panes, re-parented — so nothing restarts when you switch into it. It holds eight streams, and a pane that has never run doesn't appear, since an untouched pane isn't somewhere you were. Its contents are fixed while you're looking at it rather than reshuffling under you.

Last-activity times are saved with the session, so Recent still has yesterday's work after a relaunch. Stars are saved separately.

Moving a stream to another workspace

Right-click a stream tab → Move to Workspace → pick the destination, or New workspace… to create one and take the stream there.

The stream is removed from the old workspace — it is a move, not a copy. You land on it in the new home so you can see that.

This is safe while the stream is running. The terminal keeps running through the move — the process is never restarted, never signalled, and never told anything happened. Its scrollback comes with it, and so does everything it was in the middle of. You do not need to stop it first.

That works because nothing that makes up a stream's context is tied to a workspace:

What Where it lives Survives a move
The running process and its terminal The stream's pane, held by stream ID across all workspaces Yes
Scrollback That same pane Yes
Session history on disk {DataDir}/history/<date>/<StreamName>_<time>/ — filed by stream name Yes, no folder moves
Working directory The stream itself Yes
An AI agent's own conversation The agent's own store, keyed by working directory Yes

A workspace is a view over streams, not a container that owns them — moving one only changes where it appears.

What does break context: renaming. History and left-off summaries are filed under the stream's name, so renaming a stream means its past sessions and its Resume banner are still filed under the old one. If continuity matters, move freely but rename sparingly.

Troubleshooting

  • A workspace came back empty after restart — check Settings > General > Startup: "Restore on launch" restores the layout, and "Auto-start on restore" controls whether the terminals start automatically or wait for you to press play. See Session persistence.
