Back up this PC

Last updated: 25 October 2026

Back up copies the whole drive you pick to a VHDX image. Windows, apps, settings and files are in that image. Stillwater copies used space, takes a snapshot so you can keep working, and reads the image back afterwards to check it.

How to use it

  1. Open Back up this PC.
  2. Pick the drive to copy.
  3. Pick another drive for the image. Stillwater will not put the image on the drive it is copying. A USB stick is not this step. The stick is only how you start a PC that will not boot.
  4. Read the plan. It names the disk and what will be written.
  5. Start the backup and leave both drives connected until it finishes.

Troubleshooting

  • The disk you want is not in the list: Some disks are missing.
  • The image is a normal VHDX. Windows can open one with a double-click. Stillwater's own "open an image" browser is not in this version.
