Connect a device

What it does. Lets a phone or tablet on the same Wi‑Fi record a survey. Android uses the HollowMap app (best). iPhone, iPad — and Android without the app — use the browser.

How to use it

1. On the desktop, the walk code is the large 6-digit number at the top of the window. Click it to copy. Connect device in the toolbar opens the Dashboard's Connect card with the QR code and link.

2. Android app: on the tablet, open Chrome to the same URL (or scan the QR). Tap Download Android app, install (do not uninstall first). Open HollowMap and fill in both fields:

   • PC address — the address and port from the desktop, e.g. 192.168.1.20:9444. The app cannot reach the PC without it, and Start will say Save the desktop URL first.
   • Walk code — the 6 digits.

   Tap Save until it says will save to PC, then Start recording.

3. In a browser (iPhone, iPad, or Android): scan the QR — it carries the key, so there is nothing to type. Past the certificate warning: on Safari Show Details → visit this website, on Chrome Advanced → Proceed. Allow Location. The page you land on is the recorder — see Record in a browser.

4. The desktop may list the tablet On the LAN after ping, before the code. That is not a saved walk. RECORDING means points are landing.

Troubleshooting

• Need walk code / UniFi · not in client list on the tablet — the PC is reachable but /api/status is refused or the tablet IP is not in UniFi yet. Save the 6-digit code. UniFi itself can still see galaxy-tab-… on an AP; that HUD line is not “UniFi is down.”
• On the LAN but not RECORDING — ping works without the code. Save the walk code, then Start.
• Device doesn't appear — same Wi‑Fi, proceed past the certificate warning. See Troubleshooting connections.
• Locked out for 15 minutes — ten different wrong walk codes from one device inside 10 minutes. Wait it out, then copy the code from the desktop.
• Want USB instead of the Chrome download — optional, and manual: enable USB debugging and file transfer on the tablet, then adb install -r HollowMap.apk. Most walks just use Download Android app in Chrome on the tablet.
