Online-only photos (OneDrive, Dropbox)

Last updated: 17 September 2026

OneDrive and Dropbox can keep photos in the cloud only, showing a placeholder on your PC until you open the file. Windows Explorer marks these with a cloud icon in the Status column.

RootMap doesn't open online-only photos to look for faces: doing that would download every one of them, which can take hours and fill your disk. The People tab tells you how many it skipped ("N photos are stored online-only…").

How to fix

Make the photos available on this PC, then run face detection again.

OneDrive

  1. In File Explorer, right-click your photos folder (for example OneDrive › Pictures or Camera Roll).
  2. Choose Always keep on this device.
  3. Wait for OneDrive to finish downloading (the cloud icons turn into green check marks).

Dropbox

  1. In File Explorer, right-click your photos folder inside Dropbox.
  2. Choose Make available offline (on older versions: Smart Sync › Local).
  3. Wait for the download to finish.

Then open People and click Detect Faces. RootMap only looks at the photos it hasn't done yet, so the rest of your library isn't redone.

Good to know

  • The photos still show in the Library and on the Map while they're online-only; only face detection skips them.
  • Check you have room first: a large photo library can be many gigabytes.
  • If you'd rather not download everything, keep just the folders you care about on the device. The count on the People tab updates after the next detection run.
