Filtering & export

Last updated: 22 October 2026

What it does

Narrow the photos shown — by date or by map area — then export the result to a folder. The date filter applies to both the photo list and the map pins.

How to use it

Filter by date

  • Use the From / To date pickers, or a quick preset: This year, Last year, the most recent earlier years that have photos (for example 2019), or All. The active preset is highlighted.
  • Or click a month in the Timeline heatmap to jump to it.
  • The photo list and the map pins both update to match. Clear Filters brings everything back.

Filter by area — on the Map, the list shows the photos in the current view; draw a circle to pick an exact area, or right-click a numbered bubble to select its photos (see The map). Combine either with a date range to narrow further. The box above the list filters by file name.

Sort — order the list by Date (newest / oldest) or Name (A–Z / Z–A).

Library filters — the Library tab also narrows by Folder, Year, Type (photos or videos) and GPS (with or without a location), and switches between a list and a grid with three thumbnail sizes.

Export — click Export to copy the photos to a folder you pick. On the Map the button shows how many photos that is (Export 243) — every photo the header counts, including ones further down than the list shows. Originals are copied, not moved. When it finishes, Open folder opens the copies.

Export everyone of one person — on the People tab, right-click a person and choose Copy photos to folder…. That copies every photo they appear in (not just the first page). Or click the person: the Library opens on their photos with a 👤 Name · 212 photos chip, and Copy to folder…, Tag all… and Show on map right beside it. Click ✕ on the chip to go back to the whole library. See Faces.

Selecting photos in the Library

  • Click a photo to select it; Ctrl+click adds or removes one, Shift+click selects a run, Ctrl+A selects the page. Esc clears the selection.
  • Double-click (or Enter) opens the photo viewer.
  • With photos selected, the bar at the bottom shows 12 selected · Export · Tag · Show on map · Clear. Right-click a selected photo for the same actions, or press Delete to move them to the Recycle Bin. A photo that can't go to the Recycle Bin (the file is in use, or the drive has none) stays in your library, and RootMap tells you how many were skipped. RootMap never deletes a photo permanently.
  • Nothing selected? Export and Tag apply to every photo that matches the Library's search and filters — not just the page on screen. RootMap asks first and tells you how many that is.
  • The search box matches file and folder names, ignoring case. Press Enter to search straight away, or Esc / ✕ to clear it.

Photo viewer shortcuts

The viewer shows who's in the photo (click a name to see all their photos) and its tags, with + Tag to add one.

Key Does
← → / Space Previous / next photo
Home / End First / last photo
F or F11 Full screen (Esc to leave)
S Start / stop a slideshow (any click or key stops it)
T Add a tag
I Show / hide photo details
Delete Move the photo to the Recycle Bin (asks first)
? or F1 Show the shortcut list

Troubleshooting

  • The date filter "does nothing" — check the photos actually have dates (the Timeline shows how many do); photos with no date drop out of a date-filtered view.
  • A photo didn't delete — another app may have it open, or it's on a drive without a Recycle Bin (some USB and network drives). Close the other app and try again, or delete it in File Explorer.
  • Fewer pins than expected at world zoom while filtering — with a date filter active the map draws individual pins (capped) instead of clusters; zoom in to see them all.
