The map

Last updated: 22 October 2026

What it does

The Map tab plots every photo that has GPS coordinates. Nearby photos group into numbered clusters that split apart as you zoom in. Map tiles and place search need the internet; your photos and face data stay on your computer (place search sends only what you type to the geocoder — see the FAQ).

How to use it

  • Where it opens — the first time, the map fits all of your photos. After that it opens where you left it.
  • Pan / zoom — drag to pan; scroll wheel or the + / − buttons to zoom. The scale bar (bottom left) shows kilometres and miles.
  • Basemaps — switch between Streets, Satellite, Hybrid, and Topo (top of the map).
  • Search a place — type a city, ZIP, or address and jump there.
  • Photos in this view — with no circle drawn, the list on the right shows the photos in the part of the map you're looking at, and follows you as you pan and zoom. The header gives the full count; the list shows the first 200.
  • Hover a pin — a thumbnail preview pops up. Click a pin to see the photo and its buttons.
  • Clusters — hover a numbered bubble to see how many photos it holds and when they were taken. Click it to zoom in; right-click (or Shift+click) it to select its photos.
  • Circle selection — click the ◯ tool (top left, under the zoom buttons), draw a circle over an area, and the photo list on the right narrows to it. Drag the circle's centre to move it or its edge to resize — the list updates live as you drag. Press Esc to clear it and go back to the photos in view.
  • Export / Tag — the buttons above the list say how many photos they'll act on (for example Export 243). That's every photo counted in the header, not just the ones on screen. After an export, Open folder takes you straight to the copies.
  • Keyboard — E exports, T tags, Esc clears the circle.
  • Dark mode — in dark theme the Streets map turns dark automatically. Satellite, Hybrid and Topo look the same in both themes.

Troubleshooting

  • The whole map area is blank/white — the WebView2 runtime is likely missing. See The map is blank.
  • "Nothing on the map yet" after a scan — the library has photos, but none of them have GPS coordinates. They're in the Library; see Photos don't appear on the map.
  • Some photos have no pin — those have no GPS. The header GPS count vs indexed count is the split.
  • "Preview unavailable" on every pin — fixed in 2026.10.3; update RootMap from the Microsoft Store.
  • "API key required" over the dark Streets map or Hybrid labels — fixed in 2026.10.2; update RootMap. No key is needed for the built-in maps.
