What it does

Tags label photos so you can filter to them later. RootMap creates automatic tags for you and lets you add your own custom tags.

How to use it

Automatic tags — after a scan, RootMap tags photos by year, folder, and type (photo/video). No action needed. To run it over the whole library yourself, click ✨ Auto-tag on the Tags tab.

Create a tag — type a name in the box at the top of the Tags tab and click + New Tag, or use Manage Tags... to add, rename, recolor and delete tags in one place. Right-click a tag for Rename or Delete. A name that's already taken (ignoring capitals) is refused, so you don't end up with two.

Tag photos —

  • On the Tags tab, drag photos onto a tag, or select photos and click Add Tag to Selected.
  • In the Library, select photos and click 🏷 Tag… in the bar at the bottom, or right-click → Tag…. On the Map, click Tag above the photo list or press T.
  • In the photo viewer, click + Tag or press T.

Remove a tag from photos — with a tag selected, select the photos and click Remove Tag, or drag them to the drop area that appears.

Filter by tag — click a tag to see only its photos. All Photos and Untagged sit at the top of the list. Show: narrows the list to Years, Folders, Type or Custom tags, the Most Popular / Most Recent button switches the order, and the search box finds a tag by name, ignoring accents and capitals.

Troubleshooting

  • A new tag shows no photos — add it to some photos first (drag them onto it, or Tag…), then click it.
  • Auto-tags missing on older photos — click ✨ Auto-tag, or they fill in after the next scan.
