Putting windows back on wake

What it does

When some monitors switch off — especially over DisplayPort, or when you choose Turn off its signal — Windows may treat them as unplugged and move their windows to another screen. BranchOut Display remembers where your windows were before sleeping and puts back any that moved, a few seconds after the monitors wake.

How to use it

It's on by default. The setting is Put windows back where they were on wake, under Night mode.

Windows 11 has a similar option — Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays → Remember window locations based on monitor connection. You can leave both on.

Good to know

• Windows running as administrator can't be moved by BranchOut Display unless it also runs as administrator.
• Windows you moved or closed yourself while the monitors were asleep are left alone.

Troubleshooting

• Windows piled onto my always-on screen overnight. They'll move back on wake. To stop it happening at all, turn off "DP deep sleep" (or similar) in the sleeping monitor's menu, or connect it over HDMI.
• Some windows didn't move back. Check they aren't running as administrator.
