Windows' built-in player is fine for one clip. A folder of holiday videos, a season of files, a camera-card dump: that is where it falls over. You finish, go back to Explorer, find the next file, double-click. There has to be an arrow key.

Vantage Player is the small one in the middle. Open the file you clicked and the rest of the folder is already in reach. v2026.7.1 is the first Microsoft Store release. It is still Early Release, still free, still no account. Get it from the Microsoft Store. More on the product page and in the docs.

Play a folder, not just a file

That is the product. Swipe left or right across the picture. Left and Right arrow keys change files, not seconds. On-screen previous and next sit on the control bar. A slide-out rail on the left edge lists the rest of the folder with thumbnails. Click any of them.

Drag a file onto the window, or a whole folder.

Plays the files you actually have

Phone footage in HEVC. Camera files in MKV. iPhone clips in MOV. The built-in player wants money from the Store before it will touch them. Vantage Player uses the VLC engine under the hood, so the usual pile just plays: MP4, MKV, MOV, WebM, AVI, HEVC / H.265, and the rest.

No Store codec pack. No separate VLC install. Hardware decoding is on by default. Turn it off in Settings if a file tears.

Shipped builds are self-contained. There is no .NET runtime to install.

Stays out of the way

The control bar and the cursor hide after a couple of seconds of playback. Resume where you left off. Auto-play the next file, or repeat the current one. Fit, Fill, Stretch, plus Force 16:9 and Force 4:3 when the container lies about aspect ratio. Ctrl+S writes the frame on screen to Pictures\Vantage Player.

Help sits on the bar as a ? when you need it. Send feedback from there; it files a ticket with the log attached, file names stripped.

Windows has to confirm the default player in Settings. Apps are not allowed to switch it silently. Vantage Player registers its file types, then Settings can open the right page so you can pick MP4, MKV, MOV, and the rest.

Your videos never leave this PC

Playback is local. File and folder names are stripped from logs and are never sent. Optional usage data is a Settings toggle, on by default. Crash reports and a once-a-day update check stay on so we can fix decoder and startup failures. Turning usage off does not turn crash reports off. Decoder failures are the whole support surface.

What to do

If you already have a sideload build, this is the same 2026.7.1 you have been using. The Store listing is live now, and that is the install we want people on. If you do not have it yet, get it from the Microsoft Store. Rough edges still exist. ? on the control bar files a ticket.

This post is the human version of the first Store listing.
